Confirm the move before you pack
A website inquiry is not a confirmed placement. Before arranging travel, obtain approval from admissions, a move-in date, the actual location, payment instructions, and the written house agreement. Ask who will meet you and what to do if you are delayed.
If you are leaving treatment or another residence, coordinate timing with the people involved in that transition. Confirm whether documents are required and ask how to share them securely. Avoid sending medical records through an introductory text.
Pack for ordinary daily life
Start with practical essentials rather than everything you own. Shared homes have limited storage, so ask about space, laundry access, bedding, food arrangements, and prohibited items before bringing furniture, electronics, or large bags.
The Grace House move-in guidance includes photo ID, requested intake documents, one to two weeks of weather-appropriate clothing, toiletries and towels, prescribed medication in original labeled containers, and a notebook or recovery materials. Confirm the final list with intake.
- Photo ID and specifically requested documents
- Clothing for daily activities and work
- Toiletries and towels
- Prescriptions in original labeled containers
- Phone charger, notebook, and personal essentials
Use orientation to get the details right
Ask for a walk-through of house rules, emergency contacts, screening, curfew, visitors, chores, and medication procedures. Find out whom to speak to if a rule is unclear or a problem comes up. Write the answers down rather than trying to remember everything at once.
Grace House’s model includes weekly house meetings, household responsibilities, recovery commitments, and at least 32 hours each week of work, education, volunteering, or approved productive activity. Ask intake how your first week and any transition into that schedule will be handled; do not assume an exemption.
Build a schedule you can actually keep
Put appointments, shifts, house commitments, travel time, meals, and rest into one calendar. Start with fixed commitments and then add the practical tasks that support them, such as groceries, laundry, and arranging a ride.
Test transportation before your first important appointment. In Brevard, look up current Space Coast Area Transit routes and the last return trip. Ask whether your house offers transportation; plan independently unless that service has been explicitly confirmed.
Make connection manageable
You do not need to share your whole story on the first day. Introduce yourself, learn names, and ask how shared spaces work. A small conversation or following through on a household responsibility can be a reasonable starting point for getting to know the community.
At the end of the week, review what worked and what needs clarification. Bring specific questions to management instead of letting uncertainty build. A difficult adjustment does not automatically mean the home is wrong for you, but medical needs or an unsafe situation should not be dismissed as ordinary settling in. For an emergency call 911; for a mental health crisis call or text 988.
