Start with the support you actually need

Choosing a recovery residence is about more than finding a bed. It is a decision about the environment where you will work, rest, attend appointments, and practice daily recovery. Start by writing down your non-negotiables: a women-only community, a manageable budget, continuity of prescribed care, and a realistic way to get to work.

Sober living is not detox or medical treatment. If you are unsure whether communal housing is an appropriate next step, discuss that question with your licensed care provider before applying. A home should explain its limits clearly, not promise to meet every clinical need.

Ask for written rules, not just reassuring words

A helpful admissions conversation should leave you with specific information. Ask to review the resident agreement, screening policies, curfew, visitor rules, grievance process, and what happens if someone needs a higher level of care. Ask who is available when a problem arises and whether that person lives on site.

NARR publishes national standards for recovery residences, and FARR provides Florida certification information and a housing directory. Check the actual residence you are considering; a related organization’s certification is not proof that a separate women’s home is certified.

  • How are resident concerns and complaints handled?
  • What does a normal week look like?
  • What are the conditions for discharge or leaving voluntarily?
  • Can I review the house agreement before paying?

Compare your full weekly budget

Ask for the weekly fee, move-in charges, payment timing, refund rules, and every possible extra expense in writing. Utilities being included does not necessarily mean groceries, transportation, screening, or personal supplies are included. Confirm each category separately.

The Brevard Grace House site currently carries the reference model’s $195 weekly rate and $100 move-in fee. These are not a substitute for a current quote from admissions. Ask specifically about the women’s home and confirm the amount due before sending payment.

Test the location against your real schedule

Brevard includes mainland and beachside communities. A location that looks close on a map may involve a bridge, a bus transfer, or a last bus that leaves before your shift ends. Obtain the confirmed home location from admissions before deciding whether the commute works.

Use Space Coast Area Transit’s current route information to check the trip to work, recovery activities, and existing appointments. Do not assume the home offers rides. Build a backup plan for a missed connection, especially for evening or weekend commitments.

Make the next conversation concrete

Keep a short comparison sheet for each home: weekly cost, staffing, medication policy, schedule, transportation, and unanswered questions. Discuss prescribed medication directly with intake and your prescriber rather than changing treatment to fit a house.

Brevard Grace House is designed for adult women seeking structure, peer accountability, and purposeful activity. Contact admissions to discuss fit, confirm availability, and request the location and written expectations. You do not need to share medical records in an introductory text.
